Preventing Fruit Tree Disease

by Andrew Kelly

Virtually any garden design can be improved by the inclusion of a fruit tree, or, if you have the space, a number of fruit trees. Fruit trees can produce the most amazing displays when in blossom and, of course, you have the advantage of it bearing edible fruit later in the year. If you are in the process of designing a garden and it includes a fruit tree, such as a plum tree, which produces pitted fruit it will be necessary for you to investigate ways in which to avoid disease as these types of tree are prone to be susceptible to disease.

Brown Rot is rather a common disease seen on fruit, especially fruit which has fallen from the tree and been left on the ground. This fruit tree disease can be rather difficult to eradicate as it is a fungus and as such produces a very large amount of spores. These spores are incredibly small and can travel a surprising distance and once it appears on fallen fruit it can quickly spread to the main plant and will, eventually, appear on the fruit still on the tree.

For fungus to grow successfully it requires the right conditions which are mainly areas which remain damp and offer a suitable source of food. Obviously there are many parts on a fruit tree that could prove to be highly suitable and it is for this reason that an outbreak of Brown Rot can spread so quickly. Luckily we can help to reduce the suitability of the environment for fungal growth by simply pruning the fruit tree correctly.

Fruit trees should be pruned to create an open structure so that the fresh air can flow freely throughout the leaves and branches. Not only does such pruning help reduce the risk of fungal infection it can also ensure that the sunlight reaches all parts of the tree. By ensuring that all leaves get the maximum amount of sunshine helps to make the tree stronger and more able to withstand and fight off infection and disease.

However effective against disease pruning can be the most obvious, easiest and quite possibly the most effective way to avoid fungal infection in your fruit tree is to ensure that all fallen fruit is immediately picked up and removed from the immediate area. Furthermore, by keeping a close eye on the tree a gardener can remove and quickly destroy any parts of the tree that show signs of fungal disease.

Of course there are many other fungal diseases which may infect your fruit tree, one of which is known as cytospora canker. Although fungal it’s appearance is greatly different to Brown Rot and appears on the branches rather than upon the fruit. Dark, soft, areas appear on the branch and a callous forms which oozes gum. The most common place for it to appear is in a wound that is not fresh.

Because cytospora canker is a fungus the approach to preventing the onset or spread of the disease is very much the same as how we deal with Brown Rot. Pruning our fruit tree is really the best way in which we can protect it but, of course, if pruned correctly, your fruit tree will produce far more fruit than without pruning.

Brown Rot and cytospora canker are only two of several fruit tree diseases that can become something of a nuisance to any gardener, even the professionals can find themselves struggling. However the risk of infection can be vastly reduced by following the advice above. Obviously it is extremely important that you follow other tree care rules such as ensuring that your tree is supplied with sufficient water and nutrients but with just a little effort you can help your tree to grow strong and healthy.

The Complications of Acid Reflux

by Frank Robson

Those who suffer from Acid Reflux disease should be aware that it could be a sign that there is another issue brewing- one that could even be life threatening.

For one that suffers from acid reflux for a lifetime, it can contribute to some serious conditions. Acid comes up in the esophagus, scars and burns the walls. Food continues down this path, irritating the ulcerated surface, affecting the movement of esophageal contractions; this all adds to the problem.

Often children and infants who suffer from reflux may not actually vomit, but still, the stomach contents can move up the food pipe and spill into the windpipe into the lungs. These children can have asthma, pneumonia, and even SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) can occur. Also of concern, children with reflux who vomit often may not grow as well as they should.

When stomach fluids reflux into the esophagus, it damages the lining. When this occurs, the body will react with inflammation in what is called Erosive Esophagitis.

When ulcers and the additional inflammation are present, it can lead to bleeding into the esophagus. In severe cases, the bleeding can lead to such things as severe anemia, requiring blood transfusions, and treatments by surgery or endoscope.

Because of the scar tissue and ulceration, there is a narrowing of the food pipe. This prevents the easy passage of food, makes swallowing difficult, and can also cause breathing problems- like shortness of breath and wheezing.

After being subjected to gastric acid reflux for such a long time, the cells in the lining of the esophageal wall can change. The cells in the walls can become pre-cancerous, then later cancerous. This condition (Barrett’s esophagus) occurs in roughly 10% of all acid reflux patients. There are more and more people being diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus today.

There are also a group of nerves in the lower part of the esophagus which are aggravated by the acid reflux. Sometimes them getting disturbed causes what we call heartburn. There are other people in which these nerves will disturb other nerves. These nerves will cause constriction of the airways, and cause the person to cough and get breathless.

Smoking Problems and The Problems of Smoking

by Andrew W John

Cigarette smoking is not a good habit, that’s what one can hear even from smokers. Nicotine is addictive, making it difficult to give it up, and ex-smokers usually need a real fit of strong will to stop smoking. Sadly, because giving up smoking requires some strong will on the smoker’s side, many smokers simply do not bother with trying to give up. If they only really knew what is at stake…

Why are people smoking? Te problem is that no one really knows, even the smokers themselves. Cigarettes devastate one’s image and good look, they cause terribly bad breath and they are quite expensive. What is worse, they also affect the health of everyone around you, especially children. To make things even worse, the initial effects of nicotine intake - the feeling of relaxation - does not last long and soon disappear completely when body accommodates for the nicotine and ceases to react on this drug.

Death Bought On The Installment Plan

First of all, you must understand the scale of the problem. Almost half-million people die every year because of smoking, mainly due to lung cancer and other respiratory problems. The cigarette smoke contains over 4000 harmful chemical compounds, almost a hundred of them are known to trigger cancer. In other words, we are willingly performing mass murder on ourselves - and we even pay for the chance of getting killed!

Smoking however, does much more than just cause lung cancer. It affects also the heart making it more probable to have a stroke, and increasing chances for developing allergies, respiratory problems such as asthma and other chronic diseases. This may happen both to smokers themselves, and to those who only inhale the smoke, for example children of smoking parents.

We may say of course, that people are free to do whatever they want, even if they harm themselves. Of course that true - we live in a free country anyway - but the problem is that one of the main victims of our bad habits are our children. OR, to tell the truth, parents and children alike. First of all, cigarette smoke may cause infertility both in males and females. Then, a woman who breaths in cigarette smoke during pregnancy sentence their children to suffer from the respiratory problems for the rest of their life. In more extreme cases, smoking during pregnancy may also cause premature infant deaths and early deliveries.

Smokers’ deaths are only the beginning…

Most smokers however will claim that all those risks of death are just a chance, and they are ready to take it for the cigarette’s sake. The problem is that some bad thing happen to every smoker. You may live for a long time even if you’re a chain-smoker. However, you will look like a death warmed up for the better part of your life - and this can’t be helped. It’s not the statistics, it is the real life.

The problems with the changing color of teeth is well-known both to smokers and non-smokers. The tar from cigarettes stains teeth, often forming plaque that can be removed only via dental cleaning. What people do not know is that smoking damages your gums, too. It’s not even about the risk of swelling or inflammation, but about restraining the blood circulation in gums, thus weakening them to the point where they can’t really support the teeth.

The teeth problems are what should really count to smokers. The chance of cancer or respiratory diseases may not seem real enough (though it is 100% real, too). On the other hand, losing teeth due to smoking is not theoretical. It will happen to every smoker, even though they may not notice the connection. If you start smoking at the age of 19, you will probably have five teeth less by the age of 36. To make things worse, cigarettes are also responsible for most after-dental surgery complications, slowing down the healing rate and making your mouth an ideal place for infections to settle in. This may not be obvious if you are generally in a good physical condition, but when the inside of the mouth is already under great strain after, say, teeth removal, the effects may be immediate.

This does not really need anything else, but we promised the whole truth, and there is one more thing about smoking you should now: the damage it does to your physical appearance. As nicotine has negative effect on the effectiveness of your circulation, your skin and hair suffer first when the nutrients do not arrive there in large enough quantities. The skin changes color into a paler and duller shade, and hair start breaking and getting thinner. The effect takes a few years, so many smokers do not attribute their hair problems to smoking, but in reality the only reason for hairs breaking ups is the cigarette smoke.

The time is running. With every cigarette you smoke, you cause irrevocably damage to your health and (reversible) negative change in your appearance. The only right thing to do is quitting smoking right her and right now. Of course, nicotine is addictive and giving up cigarettes is much more difficult than one may think. Fortunately, Cig-Arette is able to minimize the negative symptoms you may suffer during the withdrawal period. Try it and it’ll help you get back in shape faster than you think!

Laugh At A Cartoon…Save Your Life

by Rick London

You might think about calling a good doctor to put me away if I told you that a good cartoon might save your life, or at least increase the quality of your life. Ironically it is good doctors who agree with this theory.

Dr. Bernie Siegel is but one, but there are so many others whose recommendation is to surround oneself with humor, whether it be cartoons, videos, magazines, or whatever else is available at the moment. Cartoons are usually readily available, especially on the Internet or newspapers. A funny cartoon can release endorphins immediately; the type of immune system-friendly ones that can, allegedly not only make you live longer, but healthier. In my own life, common sense tells me that if I was unable to utilize humor, life would be a bit drab. So would my health. I have recovered from some severe illnesses, a few that doctors said “I might not make it”, I think, only because of my sense of humor. I am certain their own potions helped as well, but without laughter and hope, faith can fade and fade fast.

I began creating Londons Times Cartoons in 1997 after my mom passed away. I had been bringing her funny videos daily upon her request during her final days. She loved to laugh. I did not have a lot to start with, as far as financing, but had a lot of creative ideas, and was fortunate enough to build an illustrative and management team who knew what they were doing. For years I thought it would be a hobby or some kind of avocation but it became a real business, taking a life of its own. I still look back in disbelief.

I began to believe, maybe for the first time, at age 43, that if the common man or woman puts their mind to something, they can do it, regardless of social status, education, gender or race. It simply takes focus, a plan, and the guts to work the plan. When I say guts, I don’t mean at all that one is a hero for trying it. It is only that I have found in my lifetime, that dreams are “a dime a dozen”. Everyone has a book in them, a huge building, a creative venture, or some other dream. More often than not, it stays with them, in their heads, until the very end. Nothing can be more tragic than that, yet nothing is more common.

A person can achieve anything, and often it takes the help of others. I will give you an example. Over the years, I had written literally thousands of cartoons. Though I could draw fairly well, not well enough to meet the standards of what I wanted in a cartoon. Thanks to the Internet, I found a way to recruit some of the best illustrators of cartoons on the Internet. They were willing to take on this project with me, still in its seed/dream stage, based on the quality of the concepts which would later become cartoons.

One year later, maybe 1998, I had possibly 100 cartoons up on a free sub-domain. I could not even afford my own domain at the time. Pop-up ads ruled the site and visitors usually got angry and left as soon as they arrived. But I persisted. And I use that word because of how important it is. Persistence is probably as important, if not more important, than venture capital and unique talent.

I believe that being persistent and reliable, not just alone but that of my creative team, within ten years, we built Londons Times Cartoons and 11 e-stores. We now have over 8000 color cartoons and almost 100,000 licensed image products that sell well. Our main website, Londons Times Cartoons. We have received nearly 8 million visitors since 2005.

I still scratch my head in disbelief at what can be accomplished if one tries. I cannot believe it all happened in such a short time-span as a decade. But it did. And it did while I was disabled. I had been employed since age 12 and became disabled in my early forties due to depression and heart disease. During that time I also went back to school and finished three years in business. I am on break now, taking care of other health issues, and then plan to return to finish and then hopefuly my MBA.

Believe it or not, I am no more “unique” than anyone else. I just happened to focus on a subject that was considered “niche”; anyone could have done it. I researched and found the people and elements that made it work. If I can do it, so can you. I promise.

Mesothelioma Signs And Symptoms

by Ron Powers

The symptoms of Mesothelioma, a form of cancer, often take between 20 and 50 years to develop. Unfortunately, this delay can prevent the discovery of the disease and result in misdiagnoses. The first signs are similar to many other illnesses, such as colds or flu, and can therefore be dismissed. Another character of mesothelioma is respiratory problems, such as pain in the chest and difficulty breathing. The three forms of mesothelioma have slightly different symptoms.

Mesothelioma pleural effusion, develops, following a pleural effusion, a buildup of liquid in the pleura in the chest, which frequently cause symptoms, such as the following: respiratory complaints, the difficulties with swallowing disorders, shortness of breath, persistent cough, rasping, weight loss, fever, coughing Blood, and pain in the chest.

The signs and symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma, a cancer of the mucous membrane of the abdomen, include weight loss, bump and abdominal pain that are caused by ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity), and intestinal occlusion, blood clotting disorders, anemia and fever.

Finally, the rarest type of mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma, includes mild to severe pain in the chest, shortness of breath, palpitations, a persistent cough, and severe fatigue.

For the diagnosis, whether it be the symptoms of a patient with any of the mentioned mesothelioma, when compared to other forms of cancer is a little less difficult o diagnose, an X-ray or ultrasound examination can be used. If the results of these methods are not conclusive, a biopsy can resolve if cancer is there or not. As of now, there is no cure for mesothelioma. Research and clinical trials are in progress.

Please note. I am not a medical doctor and this is not medical advice but just the passing on of information I have gathered from several sources on the net. If you believe you may have mesothelioma you should consult a licensed medical doctor immediately

Some Common Factors That Lead To Acid Reflux Disease

by Frank Robson

Acid reflux is a chronic, harmful condition that can be caused by a number of different things. This article will look at what could be leading to the problem.

One of the main reasons that people experience the caustic fluid backup that is characteristic of acid reflux is improper functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES muscles. These muscles are found at the base of the esophagus and provide a method of opening and closing the passageway to the stomach. When the LES muscles are weakened, they are often unable to fully close. This can result in acid from the stomach finding its way up into the esophagus.

Abnormalities in the esophagus are another common cause. Several parts of the esophagus can be malformed, but the two most common ones are peristalsis and what is known as adult-ringed esophagus. Adult-ringed esophagus is a condition with small rings in the throat that stop a person from swallowing properly. Improper stomach function is yet another factor that can lead to acid reflux disease.

Over half of the people suffering with acid reflux have stomach muscles that are not able to respond quickly to stimuli. This can lead to extended time periods when the stomach is not emptied, which can in turn lead to a backing up of acid into the esophagus.

Hiatal hernias are another common problem. The hiatus is a hole in the diaphragm that helps to keep the passageway between the stomach and the esophagus secure. It’s normally tight, but if it becomes weakened somehow the muscles can loosen and lead to a small part of the stomach actually protruding through the hiatus.

This condition is known as a hiatus hernia. These hernias are not responsible for acid reflux directly, but they can cause the LES muscles to not function properly, ultimately leading to reflux problems.

On top of all the previous causes, certain drugs can also play a part. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can sometimes lead to acid reflux, as well as aggravating the condition in people who already have it.

These drugs are quite common, and some of the most recognized brands of NSAIDs include Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, and Aleve. A recent research study showed that people who regularly took these medications were as much as two times as likely to experience some symptoms of acid reflux.

Asthma and diabetes are two other things to consider when diagnosing the cause of acid reflux. At least half of all asthma sufferers are known to experience acid reflux, and we have not yet discovered which disease may be causing the other.

People who suffer from diabetes need to be careful of their eating habits. Many diabetics suffer from a condition known as gastroparesis, which is a condition that causes the emptying of the stomach to be delayed. This can again cause the acid in the stomach to backup into the esophagus.

Alternative Cancer Treatment

by Bobbie McKee

Cancer can be a scary thing and it cannot be cured in every case, but there are alternative cancer treatments available that can complement traditional therapies like chemotherapy, radiation, and pharmaceuticals that don’t have near the debilitating side effects. In some cases, it is true that the treatment is worse than the disease. Cancer treatments have progressed in the past few years, but most people that undergo traditional cancer treatment experience side effects such as weight loss, lack of appetite, hair loss, or secondary infections that take over due to immune system suppression. These side effects and complications can range from mild to very serious, and depend on a lot of different factors. Each individual has a unique experience with cancer and the treatment regimens prescribed. Some experience horrific side effects, and others tolerate it quite well and suffer very little from treatment, and many don’t even know that alternative cancer treatments are available.

Most alternative cancer treatments have few or no side effects and work well as an adjunct to current therapeutic regimens, which is why it is a viable and attractive option to people who are looking for a different approach in treating their disease. Of course, there are many scams and alternative treatment therapies out there that are nothing but placebos, which could do a person more harm than good. If you or a loved one are considering an alternative cancer treatment, be sure to research it thoroughly first before you commit. Keep in mind that most traditional cancer treatment specialists will not have much good to say about alternative cancer treatments and vice versa. This attitude reflects the traditional Western approach to medicine, that diseases must be cured by manufactured pharmaceuticals and toxic chemical treatments only, aside from the fact that these treatment modalities may be more detrimental in the long run and not eradicate the cancer completely. Don’t get me wrong, many cancer patients have had good outcomes using traditional science and cancer treatments, but unfortunately this is not the case for everyone, and what type of hell did these people go through during their treatment, and were they aware of alternative cancer treatments?

Alternative cancer treatments are another viable option available to people who suffer from most any type of cancer at any stage. Some people have had amazing results, which isn’t to say that everyone will, but the option is there. For more in depth information on alternative cancer treatments visit www.alternative-cancer-treatments.com, www.quackwatch.org, www.immunemedicine.com, www.cancertutor.com, www.cancer.org, and www.cancersociety.com. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, learn all you can about the all treatment options available, including alternative cancer treatments.

The Holistic Look at Cholesterol - It is not all bad

by Meng

Do you know that cholesterol is essential to the production of sex hormones? Regulate mood and help the body deal with stress ? What we hear these days are all the negative aspect of cholesterol and most people are mis-informed about the important role of cholesterol. There are 2 types of cholesterol namely the dietary cholesterol and the blood cholesterol

Not many people know that our liver produces cholesterol. And cholesterol can be either beneficial to us or expose us to the risk of heart disease and stroke. We have heard of the bad cholesterol that plaque our vein and artery and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke and the good cholesterol that keep our vascular system healthy. It is important to understand both the “good” and “bad” cholesterol so we can tackle high cholesterol problem via informed lifestyle, diet and exercise changes.

The difference between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol is that dietary cholesterol is ingested from our food, absorbed into our bloodstream through our digestive system. Blood cholesterol is produce from our very own liver, circulate within our vascular system.

Dietary cholesterol plays a minute role to our cholesterol level compare to if you have family history of cholesterol problem, presence of thyroid, diabetes and kidney disease. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, exercise routine and our body weight also plays a much more important role in our cholesterol level then dietary cholesterol.

There is a connection between the amount of fat, especially saturated fat and trans fatty acids that we consume and the level of our LDL cholesterol, (the bad one). When we eat an abundance of foods such as meat, egg yolks, dairy products, and foods that contain hydrogenated fats we can help to increase our LDL cholesterol level which is the “bad cholesterol”. We want our LDL blood cholesterol level to be low and our HDL blood cholesterol level to be high in order for our bodies to be heart healthy. We should limit or avoid foods such as French fries, doughnuts, breaded or fried chicken, fish, crackers, cookies and baker products when trying to reduce our intake of trans fats (trans fatty acids).

While attempting to lower the bad (LDL) cholesterol, it is important to avoid the trans fat and saturated fat rather then avoiding the lean meat, eggs and dairy as these food contain the nutrients like zinc, protein, calcium, B-complex etc that the body needed to function properly.

Having high HDL cholesterol is healthy for our body because it helps to break-up the plaque that high levels of LDL cholesterol help to form in arteries leading to the heart and brain. HDL cholesterol can also help to reduce LDL cholesterol and get rid of it from our systems.

Now you know that not only is some cholesterol naturally occurring in our bodies because it is produced in our liver, HDL cholesterol is also an essential part to keeping our hearts and brains healthy.

Alternative Treatments for Psoriasis

by Richard Haigh

A brief look at the causes and treatments for Psoriasis

Research has not definitively recognized what precisely causes psoriasis, but fresh studies have indicated that it may be an immune mediated disorder. Psoriasis is a disorder of the skin that affects over 6 million people in the United States alone. Psoriasis occurs when the body produces too many skin cells and may alter from one type to a different type within a matter of days.

Psoriasis described as a constant skin disorder that generally affects 1% to 3% of the world’s population, and is characterized by periodic flare-ups of red patched covered by a silvery and flakey scale typically on the scalp.

There are several variations of psoriasis, but the most common is plaque psoriasis, but the exact cause of psoriasis is unknown. It is believed that a combination of several factors contribute to the development of psoriasis.

It may improve, flare up, and even go into remission only to return at a later date. When alternative treatments are used in conjunction with other treatments the patient is given a feeling of control over the negative mental aspects associated with psoriasis.

The success rates of alternative psoriasis treatments are not easy to gauge due to decisive test results not being willingly made available. Psoriasis has long been one of the most tricky skin conditions for researchers to treat. Many alternative treatment options obtainable may not work and may play on the need of the patient only as a means to make money, which is a shame; but that is the way of the world. Try and find out what works for you ( it may not work for another)

Before a patient afflicted with psoriasis tries an alternative treatment, they need to seek discussion it with their physician who may transfer them to a dermatologist. It must be said that there is not one miracle cure for psoriasis, but quite a few alternative treatments are accessible. Many of the accepted treatments include acupuncture, manipulation, diet, dietary supplements, and herbal therapies.

Acupuncture is a technique which relieves pain and treats disease by inserting and manipulating fine needles in the body at varying depths in acupressure points. It’s success varies largely from person to person and may take several treatments in order to help. Acupuncture, however, is not a common way to treat psoriasis in China, but there is evidence that is an effective psoriasis treatment. It can also be expensive

The benefits of acupuncture includes, no side effects which indicates that no negative side effects are an issue. Acupuncture is becoming more accepted as a means of treating and controlling the pain associated with psoriatic arthritis and rheumatism.

Manipulation treatment is an additional term used to illustrate any method of treating pain which includes realigning the joints. Manoeuvring of the joints ought to be done only by a extremely skilled person in order to shun any risk that the manipulation treatment might actually do harm to the inflamed joints rather than assist them.

There is little physical proof that manipulation is actually a helpful psoriasis treatment, but massage can be very helpful in relieving the muscle pain and restoring joint health due to inflammation associated with psoriatic arthritis.

It has already being stated that there is at this point in time, there is not a cure for psoriasis and the treatments that are already available are really for controlling the disease rather than curing it. Treatment options that are not alternative treatments but are available for psoriasis, come as a variety: from topical therapies to phototherapy and systemic therapy for the more severe cases of the disease.

All of these treatment options are considered by psoriasis patients to have several drawbacks in terms of convenience, safety, or effectiveness. The advent of new biological therapies may potentially offer patients suffering from psoriasis hope of long term treatment which is safer than the current available options.

Topical treatments work relatively quickly at clearing lesions and are typically well tolerated by the majority of psoriasis sufferers. Topical therapies also remained the mainstay of treatment for many patients suffering with mild psoriasis.

Dithranol is a topical therapy which has been used often to treat psoriasis. However, topical treatments must be used repeatedly to remain effective and are often not able to maintain remission of an outbreak. It can be effective for mild to moderate psoriasis and is often used with ultraviolet treatments for patients with more severe psoriasis.

There are very important key issues which restrict the use of Dithranol as it can cause frustration and burning to the skin and tends to stain everything it comes in contact with.

Weather is another strong factor in triggering psoriasis. Exposure to direct sunlight tends to help improve psoriasis, but cold and shorter days, as seen in the winter months, can trigger the rash to worsen.

Psychological stress has been a common trigger for psoriasis flares, but studies are still unclear as to why this occurs. Daily hassles of everyday life can trigger a flare as well, which is understandably frustrating for those who suffer from psoriasis. Low levels of calcium have also been reported to trigger a psoriasis flare up, but low levels of vitamin D do not trigger a flare up.

It is helpful for patients to eat only what makes them feel the most healthy. Dietary supplements encompass vitamins, herbal products, Aloe Vera (drinking it and using it as a cream) and minerals can usually benefit the entire body. Various studies have also shown that a healthy diet and lifestyle benefits everyone, especially those who suffer from psoriasis.

However, there is no evidence that a particular supplement is a cure for psoriasis. In fact, unfortunately, there is a danger that some dietary food supplements, including multivitamins, could possibly interfere with prescription medications and patients should talk this over with their doctors before starting any new supplements.
